The Feeling of Words, acrylic on paper and canvas by Anita George, 16 Nov to 21 Dec, 2024
“Although a Calligraphic artist, I consciously direct attention away from isolating words or paintings in the artworks and instead urge the viewer to perceive them as an integrated whole. Free form, free expression are all words associated with my Calligraphy now. Masterclasses overseas have pushed this even further.
This is where I am at the moment, using any tool in expressing the fluidity of thoughts while still retaining the memories and practices of my Calligraphic training. All my experiences have given me a range of rules that I now break in order to take my own path between the traditional techniques and free expression. This a celebration of the freedom of letters.”
Places I Have Been, Things I Have Seen, urban and rural paintings by Pauline Bailey, 16 Nov to 21 Dec, 2024
“Although my work can be quite detailed, I take a simplistic approach to painting by depicting my subject “as I see it”. I was born and raised in Melbourne but relocated to the country over thirty years ago. I still visit the city regularly, so my paintings reflect both rural and urban life, inspired by my own photography.
For this exhibition, I chose places and scenes that have left an impression on me in some way. Some are from Gippsland where I live, others from my travels around Australia and America. The structural paintings of buildings are detailed and complex while the rural scenes are less structured, more simplistic portrayals of my local surroundings. Old buildings, cafes, shopfronts, pubs and farmhouses are juxtaposed with the peaceful surrounds, mountain views and meandering roads of Gippsland and beyond, perhaps reflecting my own life which combines both city and country.”
