Incidentals

7 February to 28 March, 2026

Paintings by Julie Puchalski, Ceramic objects, the incidental objects we use every day are the focus of this body of work. Through the genre of Still Life Painting, I focus on everyday ceramic objects to create an array of possibilities of compositions. I use pottery pieces from different cultures and with different purposes, both traditional and modern, simple, and decorative and containers for all sorts of functions. The aim is to use the ceramic object as a representation of individuality. All are similar in purpose while collectively are extensively varied.

Series 1. Two Containers: Taking just two containers and placing them in a simple composition I aim to show multiple possibilities of images and combinations that can be created from two everyday items. The repetition of topic and format gives each form a new perspective and brings harmony and contrast to both the work and the presentation of the objects as a series. I have drawn my influences from the paintings and etchings of Giorgio Morandi and his wonderful still life work. His use of his collections of objects in arrangements and rearrangements can be quite poetic. His study of objects and the variations of a given motif in multiple composition allow him to create new and subtle differences which I find inspiring.

Series 2. Ceramic Containers in the Round:  In this series I have chosen to paint on round canvas boards. This change of shape complements many ceramic pieces which are made in the round. The beauty of small things, the domestic and the artistic have all been the inspiration for this series of round works. I hope my selections and compositions have created work that presents a fresh way to look at the things we use and that humans have been making, using, and decorating throughout the ages.
