About Wood and Music

26 July to 6 September, 2025 with works in wood and handmade guitars by Tom King and works in wood and handmade drums by Roger Terrill.

Tom is a guitar maker/repairer/teacher based in Melbourne. He made his start at Cole Clark Guitars, where he developed an appreciation for the great range of sustainable native tone woods Australia has to offer. He then moved to the Netherlands to complete an apprenticeship under Frank De Haan, eventually becoming an instructor at De Haan Guitars’ School of Guitar Making. This lead to roles as a maker at Stoney Creek Guitars and as a technician at Homestead Guitars. Tom’s background as a Materials Engineer has also helped him experiment with uncommon materials and novel build techniques and features. These days when he’s not working on commissions out of his Chadstone workshop, you can find him teaching guitar making and furniture making at The Shed, Melbourne.

Roger, after years of being a frustrated hobbyist woodworker, commenced an apprenticeship in Fine Furniture in Pascoe Vale at the age of 32 in 1994. Since then, he has worked in a number of different fields including cabinetmaking and aged care. In 2002 he created Terrill Percussion building African drums and performing and teaching African percussion. In 2001 he met Mat Duniam, a kit drummer, and between the two of them developed what today is Red Rock Drums (Aust). In addition to solid timber drum kits, Roger also builds bespoke furniture items and can’t resist a challenge! This exhibition is a dive into the soul of the woodworker and his various creations that emanate from his property in Rokeby, West Gippsland.
